Hello everyone mi-chan here and this time I'm gonna make a review about the VN called Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki or Sakusaku for short. I was quite curious about this cuz the it's company that made this is a one that catched my interest. So once I saw it's translation I played it and now time for it's review. Hope you'll find this useful.
Name: Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki
Publisher: Palette
Release date: 2014-06-27
Amount of gameplay: 10-30 hours
Asaba Yuma is a second year student at the Mihaya Academy. He spends his everyday life by listening the love problems of girls and give them advice. Due to this he has earned quite the popularity, to the point of a bounty placed on him. For all the stuff has happened with the girls, he has lost his interest on love. That is until a girl who has claimed that she's a love fairy which tries to make him fall in love. From that day forward his life will take an interesting turn.
About the Game
Sakusaku is a slice of life/romance VN with supernatural elements. Our protagonist Asaba Yuma is a guy who spends his days in school as a love counsellor in school, and he has become so popular that a bounty placed on him whether a girl can steal his heart.
Of course since he has no interest in love this doesn't help the girls who are interested in him at all. What really caused him to change his approach was a self-proclaimed Love Fairy called Tina to approach him and tells him to fall in love with someone. Due to her and a few other reasons he decides to give love a chance.
This VN has 4 routes at the start one unlockable route after finishing a specific one among the first 4. I'm not sure if that route is the true one however if you ask me, either that one or the unlocks that route can be considered as one.
Main Characters
Asaba Yuma
Our extremely popular protagonist who is a second year student at Mihaya Academy. A blunt but very caring person who tries to help anyone he cares about. He's a member of the health committee, he works at the infirmary to help the school nurse and as a love counsellor. He's hard-working, pretty smart and has quite the tongue which saves him from really unwanted situations time to time. Due to this personality of his, I really like Yuma as a character.
Jinpou Ann
A third year at Mihaya Academy and the current student council president. Although her beauty has earned the admiration even the girls, her reputation is not that great due to her eccentric personality and the way of speech, which usually faces Yuma's effective counters. She's very friendly and energetic, and always acts in unexpected ways. She's smart and very manipulative, there's a high chance you won't realise that you're at the palm of her hand until it's too late. She is interested in Yuma and tries to recruit him to the student council. Because she is such a colourful character Ann is definitely my favourite heroine.
The focus of this route is thinking about others. Despite her eccentric personality, Ann actually cares about others very much and tries to make them happy if it's within her powers. When this personality of hers combines with certain circumstances; it will affect her, Yuma and several other people. This route is probably my favourite one; it's funny, full of surprises but at the same time deep and emotional.
Ichinose Mio
A second year student at Mihaya Academy and the childhood friend of Yuma. She is the daughter of a shrine family. She is too honest, too kind and too naive which can cause problems time to time. She also has an interest in BL (Boy's Love) and quite the imagination which results in having weird delusions.
The focus of Miu's route is the relationship of 2 childhood friends. Mio actually has a severe case of androphobia (fear of men). Whenever she gets in a physical contact with a guy she starts crying, including Yuma. So the 2 try to cure this fear of hers. Also, the 2 are childhood friends so the past of them is another critical thing in this route. The plot of this route is rather cliche, but execution is impressive and Mio is definitely the cutest girl so I really liked this route.
Tsukishima Yuri
A second year student at Mihaya Academy and a classmate of Yuma. She's also the current public morals chairman and works as a waitress at the school cafeteria. A responsible and hard-working person who's a stickler to the rules which causes her to be at odds with Ann most of the time. She thinks loves is stupid and strongly rejects the idea of falling in love. She has a twin sister called Hanako which has a personality completely opposite of hers.
The focus in this route is self desires. Yuri tends to worry too much about the things around her and doesn't think about herself. This causes her to act against her own desires without being aware of it herself. This route is mostly about these outside reasons which affects Yuma and Yuri. Unfortunately this route is repetitive and Yuri's character development throughout the route is rather abrupt so it isn't very good even though the plot is nice.
Asaba Konami
Yuma's little sister and a first year at Mihaya Academy. She's a very calm, composed and very smart; and has quite the tongue which causes Yuma trouble sometimes. She doesn't see Yuma as a member of opposite sex at all, being seen in underwear or stark naked by him is alright with her. She likes shogi and very good at it. Due to some reasons she also has a wanted poster with a bounty much higher than Yuma's which is another troubling situation for him.
The focus of this route is the cliche forbidden love between the siblings. The two of them have entered into a forbidden world and try to deal with the problems it brings. To be honest I don't like this route. But only it's cuz I dislike incest. The execution of the plot is very well done, and Konami is a character I really like so this route is a good one objectively. But I still am against this kind of romance.
Tina
The self-proclaimed Love Fairy who suddenly entered Yuma's life one day. Without having anywhere to go, Yuma and his family allowed her to stay at their home. Even though she's supposed to help Yuma to fall in love with someone, she completely acts like a NEET. She has a familiar called Kotarou which looks like a plushie. She's seriously immature, airhead and confident if not arrogant.
The focus of this route is 'Love'. Technically this entire game is about love and in every single route love is one of the striking points but in this route, love is like the only striking point. We're going to witness the reasons for Tina's obsession with love, forcing Yuma to fall in love, the happy and sad sides of love several other things regarding the emotion called love. This route is pretty nice; it's very emotional, romance is definitely heart-warming and the execution is impressive but it's my NO2 route due to certain reason. Despite the fact that Tina and Yuma are at the same age, she's a loli. So even though I've found their love heart-warming at some scenes I was like 'This is definitely not okay'.
The Ups
The common route, Ann's route and Tina's route are very good. While every single route is funny, emotional and heart-warming; these 3 are especially well done.
Plotwise this VN is definitely not unique however thanks to the impressive execution this doesn't end up being a problem. The routes of Mio and Konami could be a complete failure if not for this.
Character developments are good. Every single character in this VN are unique, colourful and complete.
The drawings of the characters are very nice and cute. This VN is one of the rare ones which made my heart to scream 'MOOOOOEEEEE'. SD graphics are especially cute which were starting to become bad for my heart after some point
Downs
The amount of fan service in this VN are too much and unnecessary. They strike out but not in a good way. H-scenes are even worse. The number of them is too high, some of them are weird and some of them come in way too abruptly which made me feel really confused if not irritated. There's just no development which leads to those particular scenes which made me feel that way.
Yuri's route is bad due to the reasons I've explained already.
A final thing I didn't like is that we won't be able see Yuma's forced smile. You might not be able to understand this without reading this VN but his smiling face is one of the things that took an important role in this VN. Some people said that his forced smile is disgusting so I was really curious but unfortunately, I didn't see it so it was a let down.
Final Comments
Now the time for my final words about this VN. Sakusaku, a slice of life/romance VN with supernatural elements. Decent plot, impressive execution, cute characters... Would I recommend you to read this? To be honest I'm not so sure. This VN is definitely nice, but it's nothing special. If you're looking for something awesome then this isn't for you. If you're fine with something enjoyable however, then this VN is good enough. It's good to pass time. Well, that's all from me folks see you next time.
